This program will present an overview of the updated 2018 criteria.
The Beers Criteria serve as a critical tool in in preventing adverse drug events in older adults and are an important tool for systems and individuals who seek to ensure high quality healthcare for older adults.
Originally conceived of by the late Mark Beers, MD (a geriatrician), the Beers Criteria catalogue medications that place older patients at an elevated risk for adverse drug events (ADEs) due to the physiologic changes of aging and concurrent conditions.
The criteria were originally published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 1991 In 2011, the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) convened an 11-member multidisciplinary panel of experts in geriatric medicine, nursing, and pharmacotherapy to develop the 2012 American Geriatrics Society Updated Beers Criteria for Potentially Inappropriate Medication Use in Older Adults.
The 2012 AGS Beers Criteria differ from previous editions in several ways.
These criteria include lists of medications in which the potential risks may be greater than the potential benefits for people 65 and older.
By considering this information, practitioners may be able to reduce harmful side effects caused by such medications.
The AGS Updated Beers Criteria include three main categories: (1) potentially inappropriate medications and classes to avoid in older adults; (2) potentially inappropriate medications and classes to avoid in older adults with certain conditions that the drugs listed can exacerbate; and (3) medications to be used with considerable caution in older adults.
New additions in the 2015 update include (1) a list of medication combinations that may lead to harmful interactions and (2) a list of medications that should be avoided or dosed differently for those with poor renal function.
